Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a life-threatening collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel ran across the track right in his path
The alarming incident occurred on the third circuit when track officials were seen on the track as Lawson was getting back on the race following an premature pit stop to change his damaged front wing
Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes sprinting across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a live track track officials can be allowed to just run across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is actively examining the situation
"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was notified that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the governing body
"On lap three, track officials were alerted and put on alert to access the circuit and recover the debris once every vehicle had gone by"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had made a pit stop, the instructions to dispatch personnel were withdrawn and a caution signal was displayed in that zone"
"The examination is ongoing what transpired after that point"
