The star has donated the complete sum of his £25k honor prize money to the trust for venues, which operates to preserve the UK's grassroots music venues.

Fender was presented with the prize on October 16 as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the best record of the past year.

He has chosen to give the cash to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the essential function small stages played in his beginning days.

"I wouldn't be doing my current career if it hadn't been for all the performances I played around the region, and further afield, when I was beginning," remarked Sam Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these venues have ceased operations – roughly 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, well-known musicians including the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by including a modest fee to their admission fees, which benefits local stages.

He also took part, collecting over £100k on his live tour to assist numerous small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money supported spaces that were confronting potential shutdown due to challenges stemming from flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, court cases and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces received financial assistance in upgrading facilities and gear that positively impacted musicians and concertgoers.

"The notion that funds from shows in large arenas supports the local stages, where it begins for musicians like me, is just sensible," Fender has said.

He is far from the only musician to donate his award prize money to good deeds.

When they won the award in 1996 for their album the album, lead singer Cocker declared that the group would donate their winnings to the organization War Child.

That year, rapper and singer the artist shared her award among a few charities, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I gave a thousand pounds to the center, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked updated gear," she explained to the media.

In recent years, the band donated their funds to the community center that developed their band, in addition to other local music groups.

And winners that year M People gave their winnings to a MS organization after a acquaintance was diagnosed the disease.

"Winning was quite enough," stated artist the singer. "The money was the cherry on top but we could do without the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success affected another person's life."

Last week, the trust revealed it had protected a couple of small stages in south-east England, by placing them under community ownership.

The first in Southampton and the second in the city were bought under the public acquisition program, which is funded by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who acquire "ownership units" in the venues.
