Trump and Japan's New Premier Exchange Compliments and Vow to Reinforce ‘Extraordinary’ Relationship

During a recent visit to Tokyo, ex- American leader Trump together with Japan's new Premier Sanae Takaichi exchanged friendly compliments and vowed to strengthen the already robust bilateral ties.

Key Points from the Meeting

Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘great’ figure and congratulated her on becoming the nation's inaugural female prime minister. During their talks at Tokyo's Akasaka Palace, the former president expressed confidence that Takaichi would become one of the ‘great prime ministers’ of the country.

The prime minister, identified as a protégée of late Japanese leader Abe, applauded Trump's efforts to resolve global conflicts and reportedly vowed to put forward Trump for the prestigious award.

Economic and Defense Agreements

Both governments revealed a series of joint projects in areas such as energy, AI, and rare earths. Japan-based firms are considering funding of up to $400 billion in the US.

Additionally, Japan had previously committed $550bn in long-term American projects, financing, and assurances as part of an agreement to secure relief from Trump's import duties.

Such actions are seen as possibly reducing any future requests from the US side for Tokyo to boost its defense spending. The prime minister responded to this by committing to fast-track proposals to raise defense spending to 2% of gross domestic product.

This encounter highlights the continuing importance of the American-Japanese alliance and paves the way for further cooperation on trade, defense, and diplomatic fronts.
