Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest certain decisions from the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
